Abstract:
This paper discusses the optical spectroscopic properties of the IRAS
1Jy sample (f60>1Jy) of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs:
LIR>1012L_{sun}; H0=75km/s/Mpc and q0=0). One hundred eight of
the 118 1Jy ULIGs have been observed at {Delta}{lambda}=8.3Å
resolution over the wavelength range ~4500-8900Å. These data are
combined with large, previously published sets of optical
spectroscopic data of lower luminosity infrared galaxies to look for
systematic trends with infrared luminosity over the luminosity range
LIR~1010.5-1013L{sun}.

Note (1): FSC is the prefix given to the name of all sources in the
IRAS Faint Source Catalog (see Moshir et al., 1992, Cat. II/156)
The prefix "Z" is used for objects that are not in the FSC - these
objects are contained in the Faint Source Reject File (see Moshir et
al., 1992, Cat. II/156)

H: H II galaxy
L: LINER

Note (4): Individual Notes:
a: This object was classified as a LINER by Veilleux et al.,
1995ApJS...98..171V. The reclassification of this object is due to a
slight change in the [OIII]{lambda} 5007/H{beta} ratio, which may be
attributable to differences in the extraction apertures between the
two sets of data.
b: This object was classified as a Seyfert 2 by Veilleux et al.,
1995ApJS...98..171V. The present classification is considered more
reliable because the data are of better quality and are less affected
by centering errors.

Note (1): Emission line derived in the rest frames of the objects
Note (2): In units of the bolometric solar luminosity (3.83x1033erg/s)
Note (3): This is the weighted average of the values obtained from the
standard plotting package of IRAF (SPLOT) and the fitting procedures,
with weights estimated from the relative uncertainties in the two
types of measurements
Note (4): s: sum of [SII]6716 and [S II] 6731 relative to H{alpha}
Note (5): Determined from the values of [S II]6716/[S II]6731 and the
five-level atom calculations of De Robertis et al., 1987JRASC..81..195D
Note (6): The emission-line fluxes are normalized to the observed flux
of narrow H{alpha}. In Seyfert 1 galaxies (see Table 5), the H{alpha}
flux, equivalent width, and luminosity refer to the sum of the narrow
and broad components of H{alpha}.
The uncertainty on the relative flux ratios is typically of 5%-10%,
and colons indicate values with relative uncertainties of 20%-30%.
Double colons indicate values with relative uncertainties larger than
30%, and these objects were not considered in the analysis because of
the large uncertainties in the data. The typical uncertainty on the
absolute H{alpha} fluxes is 25%-50%.
