This document describes the computer-readable version of the Photoelectric Photometric Catalogue in theJohnson UBVRI System (Lanz 1986) distributed by the Astronomical Data Center, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This catalog is a compilation of photoelectric photometry in the Johnson UBVRI system published prior to mid-1984. Included are data reduced with the Johnson UBVRI standard stars as well as three other secondary sets of standards. Listed are code number, V, U–B, B–V, V–R, R–I, I, number of observations, references, and mean values for a total of 6,849 stars in the original Johnson system (Morel and Magnenat 1978), 467 stars in the system of Kunkel and Rydgren (1979), 1,150 stars in the system of Moffett and Barnes III (1979), and 252 stars in the system of Neckel and Chini (1980).

The catalog is in 14 files. Three files are included for each standard system: the first file lists the published data; the second file lists the mean values from the data in the first homogenized to the standard system; and the third file lists references. Two additional files contain (1) a description of the numbering system of Mermilliod (1978) used to identify catalog objects, and (2) a summary file with introductory information and references formatted for printing. The present document describes the overall file structure and the individual data fields.

1  Introduction

A copy of this document should be distributed with every copy of the computer-readable catalog.

1.1  Description

The Photoelectric Photometric Catalogue in the Johnson UBVRI System (UBVRI; Lanz 1986) is a compilation of photoelectric photometry in the Johnson UBVRI system published prior to mid-1984. Included are the data compiled by Morel and Magnenat (1978) along with more recent observations in the Johnson standard system; and, in separate files, data reduced using the secondary standards of Kunkel and Rydgren (1979), Moffett and Barnes III (1979), and Neckel and Chini (1980).

The catalog is in 14 files: the first 12 files list observational data, mean values, and references for each of the four standard systems; one file describes the numbering scheme of Mermilliod (1978) used to identify objects in this catalog; and a final file contains a summary of Lanz (1986) with several tables of mean results and references for HD/BD stars and cluster stars.

There are three files for each standard system: the first file lists identification, V, U–B, B–V, V–R, R–I, I, number of observations, and reference; the second file lists the homogenized, mean values of the data in the first file; and the third file lists the full forms of the references cited in the first file.

    2  Structure

2.1  Each File as a Whole

The UBVRI consists of 14 files. Table t:files gives the file attributes that are the same no matter what computer the catalog is copied for. All records are of fixed length. The first file for each standard system contains the observational data (Table t:obs), the second file lists the mean values of the data in the first file (Table t:means), and the third file lists the full forms of the references cited by code number in the first file (Table t:refs). The thirteenth file contains a description of the numbering system used to identify objects in this catalog. The fourteenth file contains a summary of Lanz (1986), tables of mean values for HD/BD stars and cluster stars, and references. Detailed descriptions of each file are given in the following sections.

Quotations in any of the following descriptions come from Lanz (1986) unless otherwise noted.

    2.2  Observations (Files 1, 4, 7, and 10 of 14)

These files list the observational data with references for each of the standard systems. A blank field indicates no data.

  • [Identification] Code number of the star in the system of Mermilliod (1978).

  • [Multiplicity flag] Single-character code: ``D'' indicates an unresolved binary system; a number identifies one component of a multiple system.

  • [Variability flag] ``V'' if the star is variable.

  • [Count flag] Single-character code qualifying the number in bytes 57-59. The following codes are used:

    3ex

  • [/] Indicates that the actual number of observations was not listed in the source reference; ``1'' has been assumed.

  • [*] Indicates that there were at least as many observations as indicated in bytes 57-59.

  • [S] Indicates a standard star for which the the exact number of observations is not known. This appears only once, in the Johnson standard observations file.

  • [Reference] Code number of the source reference for this data. The full forms of these references are listed in separate files for each standard system (see Section s:refs).

    2.3  Means (Files 2, 5, 8, and 11 of 14)

These files list the mean values derived from the observational data, homogenized to the standard system. A blank field indicates no data. Mean color has not been calculated for variable stars, ``as it was preferred to retain one measurement, generally that with the brightest V magnitude.''

    2.4  References (Files 3, 6, 9, and 12 of 14)

These files list the code numbers and full forms of the references specific to each standard system.

  • [Number] Code number by which this reference is cited in the corresponding observational data file for this standard system.

  • [Text] Full form of the reference. When bytes 1-5 are blank, this field continues the reference of the previous record.

    2.5  Numbering (File 13 of 14)

This file contains a description of the numbering system of Mermilliod (1978) used to identify objects in this catalog. It includes references as well as tables of code numbers, and it is formatted as 80-byte lines of text, which can be read and printed out with a FORTRAN A80 format.

    2.6  Summary (File 14 of 14)

This file can be broken down into four parts:

    1. A summary of Lanz (1986), including a list of general references to the catalog, a short explanation of the numbering system of Mermilliod (1978), and a brief description of the tables which follow

    2. A single long table listing identifications, homogenized mean values, and references for HD and BD stars.

    3. A series of short tables listing mean values and references for cluster stars, by cluster.

    4. A list of the full forms of the references cited by code number in the preceding data tables.

This file is formatted as 118-byte lines of text which can be read and printed out with a FORTRAN A118 format.

    3  History

    3.1  Remarks and Modifications

The Photoelectric Photometric Catalogue in the Johnson UBVRI System (UBVRI) was received by the Astronomical Data Center (ADC), NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, from the Centre de Données Astronomiques, Strasbourg (CDS), in December 1986.

The original tape consisted of 15 text files. The first contained a description of the 14 catalog files and has been incorporated into this document; the remaining files were formatted as described in the preceding sections. A FORTRAN program was run to check the validity of each field according to its data type and value. As a result, the character ``S'', found in the number of obs. field in one record of the Johnson standard observation file, was moved to the count flag field and the number of obs. field left blank so that this field could be read by the FORTRAN I3 format indicated. No other changes were made to any of the files.
