Markarian galaxies have a moderate to strong ultraviolet continuum, as detected by an objective-prism survey at Byurakan Observatory from 1965 to 1978. The survey was done with a 40-inch Schmidt telescope, with a dispersion of 2500 angstroms/millimeter at H-alpha. The catalog contains no galaxies brighter than magnitude 13.0 or fainter than magnitude 17.5. 1.2 REFERENCES Markarian, B. E. 1967, Astrofizika 3, 55. Markarian, B. E. 1969, Astrofizika 5, 443. The files differ only in that one is sorted by sequential galaxy number and the other by right ascension. There are also attributes that will change from computer to computer. You will probably have to know these in order to use your copy of the catalog if it is on tape; therefore, they should have been supplied with your tape. These attributes are as follows: Number of tracks Density in bits per inch Block size in bytes Number of records in a block Number of blocks Character code (ASCII or EBCDIC) You might wish to write down the values alongside this list for reference. Galaxies with Ultraviolet Continuum (Markarian et al. 1967-81) Catalog Abbreviation MKN Number of files 2 Logical Record Lengths (Bytes) 74; 74 Record Format Fixed Number of Logical Records 1525; 1525 Figure 1. Summary of MKN Catalog 2.2 LOGICAL RECORD The Fortan format of the two data files is described by Figure 2 on page 4. The files differ only in that one is sorted by Markarian identifier and the other by right ascension. The individual data fields are described more fully in the text. Markanian ID Catalog designation 'MKN ' [bytes 1-4, A4]. Sequential number from 1-15000, followed by blank (1500 cases) or by "A" (25 cases). [bytes 5-9, I4, A1] Seyfert/QSO Flag "S" or "Q", respectively, if the galaxy is a possible Seyfert galaxy or QSO. [byte 10, format A1] 2 Cross-ID 1 Other name of galaxy: Morphological Catalogue of Galaxies (Vorontsov- Velyaminov et al. 1962-68): "MGC" followed by a number separated hyphens; e.g., MGC+12-06-019, MGC-02-11-001. New General Catalogue: "NGC" fo1lowed by number; e. g., NGC 3353. Index Catalogue: "IC" followed by number; e.g., IC 2209. Blue Galaxies with Emission Lines (Haro 1956): "HARO" followed by number; e.g., HARO 4. A Search for Faint Blue Stars (Humason and Zwicky 1947): "HZ" followed by number; HZ 46 is the only instance. [bytes 12-25, format A14] Cross-ID 2 See preceding description. [bytes 26-35, format A10] RA Right ascension, equinox 1950. Coordinates are from Vorontsov-Velyaminov et al. (1962-68) or from Zwicky et al. (1960-68). Hours [bytes 36-37, format I2] Minutes [bytes 38-42, format F5.1] Declination Equinox 1950. Sign "-/+" [byte 44, format A1] Degrees [bytes 45-46, format I2] Arc Min [bytes 47-49, format I3] Major axis Arc seconds on Palomar Sky Survey. [bytes 50-54, I5] Minor axis Arc seconds on Palomar Sky Survey. [bytes 55-59, I5] Magnitude Estimated from objective prism spectrum. [bytes 60-66, F7.2] Spectral type The four basic types (s, sd, ds, and d) describe the general appearance of the spectrum on the Schmidt plate, ranging respectively from sharp to diffuse. Next is a code for the strength of the ultraviolet continuum, with 1 brightest and 3 least bright. This part of the scheme changed over the course of the survey: originally, 1 meant "strong" and 2 "moderate," with an intermediate classification of 12 (galaxies 1- 3 Bytes Data Name Fortran Format 1-9 Markarian Identifier A4,I4,A1 10 Seyfert/QSO Flag A1 11 Blank 1X 12-25 Cross-ID 1 A14 26-35 Cross-ID 2 A10 36-37 RA Hours I2 38-42 RA Minutes F5.1 43 Blank 1X 44 Declination Sign A1 45-46 Dec Degrees I2 47-49 Dec Arc Minutes I3 50-54 Major Axis I5 55-59 Minor Axis I5 60-66 Magnitude F7.2 67-68 Blank 2X 69-74 Spectral Type A6 Figure 2. Summary of Data File Format 70). The codes 1, 2, and 3 imply similarity to stellar spectral types O-B0, B1-B3, and B5-B8, respectively (Markarian et al. 1979b). At the end of the spectral type there may appear an E for emission lines or E: for possible emission lines. [bytes 69-74, format A6] 4 3.0 HISTORY 3.1 REMARKS AND MODIFICATIONS The MKN catalog was received from the Centre de Donnees Stellaires (CDS), Strasbourg, France, on 2 January 1982. The following modifications were made: 1. Many keypunch errors were corrected in the emission-line subfield of the spectral type. 2. CDS catalog code was stripped off the front of each record, and the remaining 56 bytes of record length were expanded to 66. 3. Additional cross-identifications were incorporated from the published version, expanding the record length to 74; the QSO and Seyfert codes were changed from asterisks to "S" and "Q"; and a separate record was allotted to each galaxy. 4. For galaxy 705, an evident error in the published list was corrected by changing "6" in the RA hours field to "9". 5. Galaxy designations "MKN" and "MCG" were added, and the other designations placed in a standard form. 3.2 REFERENCES Haro, G. 1956, Bol. Obs. Tonantzintla y Tacubaya, 14, No. 8. Humason, M.
