This document should accompany every copy of the machine-readable cata-
 log.

1.1 DESCRIPTION

This document describes the machine-readable version of the lists "Gal-
axies with Ultraviolet Continuum" (MKN; Markarian 1967, 1969, 1969,
 Markarian and Lipovetskii 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976a, 1976b, Markarian
 et al., 1977a, 1977b, 1979a, 1979b, 1979c, 1982).

Markarian galaxies have a moderate to strong ultraviolet continuum, as
detected by an objective-prism survey at Byurakan Observatory from 1965
to 1978. The survey was done with a 40-inch Schmidt telescope, with a
dispersion of 2500 angstroms/millimeter at H-alpha. The catalog contains
no galaxies brighter than magnitude 13.0 or fainter than magnitude 17.5.

2.0 STRUCTURE

2.1 FILE

The MKN catalog consists of two data files, the structure of which is
summarized in Figure 1. The files differ only in that one is sorted by
sequential galaxy number and the other by right ascension.

There are also attributes that will change from computer to computer.
You will probably have to know these in order to use your copy of the
catalog if it is on tape; therefore, they should have been supplied with
your tape. These attributes are as follows:

   Number of tracks
   Density in bits per inch
   Block size in bytes
Number of records in a block
   Number of blocks
   Character code (ASCII or EBCDIC)

You might wish to write down the values alongside this list for reference.

2.2 LOGICAL RECORD

The Fortan format of the two data files is described by Figure 2 on page
4. The files differ only in that one is sorted by Markarian identifier
and the other by right ascension. The individual data fields are described
more fully in the text.

3.0 HISTORY

3.1 REMARKS AND MODIFICATIONS

The MKN catalog was received from the Centre de Donnees Stellaires (CDS),
Strasbourg, France, on 2 January 1982. The following modifications were
made:

1. Many keypunch errors were corrected in the emission-line subfield of
    the spectral type.

2. CDS catalog code was stripped off the front of each record, and the
remaining 56 bytes of record length were expanded to 66.

3. Additional cross-identifications were incorporated from the published
version, expanding the record length to 74; the QSO and Seyfert codes
were changed from asterisks to "S" and "Q"; and a separate record was
    allotted to each galaxy.

4. For galaxy 705, an evident error in the published list was corrected
by changing "6" in the RA hours field to "9".

5. Galaxy designations "MKN" and "MCG" were added, and the other designations
    placed in a standard form.
