Some useful hints for the VizieR usage:
-
2 colors are used throughout the VizieR pages:
(green) for setup and searches which
are dealing with or returning catalogues
(yellow) for setup and searches which
are dealing with or returning entries extracted from catalogues,
i.e. lines from catalogue tables.
(if you are fed up with these colours, just
set up your own preferences)
- the symbol
is a button that can be used to bookmark the current
window. The way it works is to re-submit the same question, but
keeping all the setup parameters (using a GET method).
Once the page is reloaded, you can safely add the link to
your browser's bookmarks or favorites.
- the selection around a position is always done by entering
a position or the name of your favorite central object in the
Target Name input box, and you can choose a
circular or rectangular target geometry.
- once results are obtained, you may change the output layout via
a simple click on the
ReSubmit or the
Modify the Query button.
- the results can also be formatted as tables readily useable
by your favorite tools:
- in TSV (tab-separated values)
which can be easily interpreted by your favorite spreadsheet utility;
files generated in this format can also be used to
re-issue queries to VizieR with the Query from a file
facility.
- in several flavours of XML for interpretation by
programs:
-
VOTable is a fully XML-compliant format containing
both the data and their associated meta-data;
- VOTable(CSV) is a replacement for
astrores format where the meta-data in XML, but the data are
keept as tab-separated values
which are easier to process by e.g. Perl scripts;
- KMZ/KML for Google-sky applications.
- in
FITS format for
astronomically-oriented applications
- an illustration of the sky coverage
of any catalog is presented in the form of clickable icons;
these are activated by the footprints checkbox.
